Young Carers Futures Conference 2023
In October 2023, our Project Manager Liz attended the first Young Carers Futures Conference in Manchester hosted by Carers Trust and Young Carers Alliance. The aim of this conference was to raise awareness of young carers, the challenges they face and the impact their caring duties will have on themselves and the wider community. The event brought together professionals, academics and young people to develop thinking on how to create a step change for young carers and young adult carers. There were presentations from leading experts and breakout sessions where there were opportunities to learn and discuss practical actions as well as what can be done to change policy relating to young carers. During the breakout session ‘Young Carers and Mental Health’, staff from Sutton Carers Centre presented on different tools they use to support young carers’ mental health and wellbeing including using the Passport programme.
During the conference, Liz met with staff from young carers services who are trained in the Skills for Life programmes through our funded Young Carer project. This gave her the opportunity to discuss collaboration with Partnership for Children to develop the Young Carers Social and Emotional Activity Cards. We will be holding focus groups to gather feedback and insights from both staff at young carers services and young carers themselves. The Young Carers Social and Emotional Wellbeing Activity Cards will be published early next year.
